Oaklands St John’s

Innovator Level - Practical strand

Started in September 2011 following a visit by 2 students and a member of staff to St John’s Sports Society in Korogocho Slum in Nairobi. The students believed that they needed to do something practical about what they had seen in Kenya. This resulted in Oaklands Community helping St John’s construct a new building to house their self-help projects like Mother’s support group and the gym. On completion of this building, the school decided to focus on promoting education at St John’s; we are now running a scholarship programme to enable children whose parents cannot afford to pay their school fees to go to school. Each Tutor group at Oaklands raises money to at least send one child to school for a year. [It costs £30 a year per child]
